ÁGUA CONTAMINADA MATA MAIS QUE TODAS AS FORMAS DE VIOLENCIA, ALERTA A ONU

O consumo de água poluída matam mais do que todas as formas de violência, segundo relatório divulgado nesta segunda-feira, 22 de março, em Nairóbi, no Quênia.

Publicado durante as celebrações do Dia Mundial da Água, o documento intitulado "Água Doente" foi elaborado pelo Programa das Nações Unidas para o Meio Ambiente (Pnuma).

O estudo afirma que pelo menos 1,8 milhão de crianças com menos de 5 anos de idade morrem por ano em decorrência da “água doente” – o que representa uma morte a cada 20 segundos. Por tal razão, o texto alerta para a necessidade de adoção de medidas urgentes.

De acordo com o relatório, as populações urbanas deverão dobrar de tamanho nas próximas quatro décadas.

Nas grandes cidades já há carência de gestão adequada das águas residuais em decorrência do envelhecimento do sistema, de falhas na infraestrutura ou de esgoto insuficiente.

A água contaminada é também um fator chave no aumento de vidas vegetais e animais mortas em mares e oceanos de todo o mundo”, relata o documento, informando que 2 bilhões de toneladas de resíduos são jogadas em águas de todo o mundo por ano.

Segundo o relatório, substâncias que compõem um poluente de águas residuais, como nitrogênio e fósforo, podem ser úteis na produção de fertilizantes para a agricultura.
